Over 150 years ago, Kimberley’s diamond boom helped ensure the bustling settlement
became a magnet for fighting men. Boxing matches abounded and drew thousands seeking action and entertainment in the Northern Cape town.
Those long forgotten days will be reprised on Saturday when Fight Arts Promotions and Rusty Gloves Combat Academy host “Diamond Fight Night”, an event that will bring together two disciplines at the Flamingo Casino.
Aiming to revive a rich history and bring the excitement of boxing back to the city, this ambitious white-collar event will also feature a pre-show with last-man-standing jiu jitsu bouts, adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening.
The main event will showcase eight boxing bouts featuring a mix of up-and-coming boxers, former professionals, and amateur fighters from lightweight to heavyweight, ensuring a diverse lineup.
One of the standout matches in the heavyweight division will see AJ Page take on his former stablemate and professional boxer King Hlungwane.
Another bout will feature Tumelo Motseki, another former professional boxer, against Courtney Julius, apparently a formidable local street fighter.
All bouts will consist of four two-minute rounds, ensuring fast-paced action.
Entrance is R100 and doors open at the casino’s entertainment grounds at 5pm.
