Even as rugby barrels along at breakneck speed and things change faster than Cheslin Kolbe accelerates, some things remain sacred and special. Like announcements for the British and Irish Lions squad, which takes place today.
Seventy two days (and six matches) hence, the first Test will take place against the Wallabies.
No matter your loyalties, the Lions are compelling; for their history, their style, their traditions, their novelty. Perhaps most of all, for how they hark back to a grander age when touring was the life and soul of international rugby.
Of course hamstrings will be torn, form will wane and coach Andy Farrell will change his mind.
Regardless, this is the 15 I’d bank on to run out against Australia in Brisbane on July 19:
Loosehead prop: Andrew Porter (Ireland).
Hooker: Dan Sheehan (Ireland).
Tighthead prop: Tadhg Furlong (Ireland).
Second row: Maro Itoje (England).
Second row: Joe McCarthy (Ireland).
Flanker (6): Tom Curry (England)
Flanker (7): Ben Earl (England).
Number 8: Tom Willis (England).
Scrumhalf: Jamison Gibson-Park (Ireland).
Flyhalf: Finn Russell (Scotland).
Left wing: James Lowe (Ireland).
Centre (13): Sione Tuipulotu (Scotland).
Centre (12): Bundee Aki (Ireland).
Right wing: Tommy Freeman (England).
Fullback: Hugo Keenan (Ireland).
Random thoughts:
- Fantastic to see Pierre Schoeman get a run on tour.
- Caelan Doris would be my captain all day.
- No room for Duhan van der Merwe, but he ought to tour.
- Huw Jones will push hard for a starting spot.
- Johnny Sexton, installed as a coach, best break bread with Russell.
